Axle alignment

Wheel alignment for even tyre wear and straight tracking.

What is axle alignment?

Axle alignment (wheel alignment) is the adjustment of the angles of the wheels relative to the vehicle and the road. The main angles are toe (the direction the wheels point relative to the centreline), camber (the tilt of the wheel in or out) and caster (the angle of the steering axis). Each manufacturer specifies target values for these angles so that the vehicle drives straight, tyres wear evenly and steering feels precise.

If the alignment is wrong – for example after hitting a kerb or pothole, or after replacing suspension or steering parts – the car may pull to one side, the steering wheel may sit off centre when driving straight, or the tyres may wear unevenly (e.g. inner or outer edge worn). We measure the current values on our alignment rig and adjust them to the manufacturer specification so that handling and tyre life are restored.

What we do

  • Measurement: We drive the vehicle onto our alignment rig and attach sensors to the wheels. We measure toe, camber and caster (front and rear where applicable) and compare them with the manufacturer specification for your model.
  • Adjustment: Where the angles are adjustable (e.g. toe via tie rods, camber via eccentric bolts or shims), we adjust them to the target values. On some vehicles, rear toe or camber is not adjustable without special parts; we will tell you what is possible and what we recommend.
  • Printout: We provide a printout of the before and after values so you can see what was changed. This is useful for your records and for resale.

We use professional alignment equipment and up-to-date data for your vehicle so that the values we set match the manufacturer specification. Correct tyre pressure and an even load (e.g. empty or normally loaded boot) are important for an accurate result.

What to bring?

  • Vehicle with correct tyre pressure on all wheels. If the pressure is wrong, the measurement and adjustment will be less accurate.
  • If possible, empty or normally loaded boot – a full load can change the ride height and thus the angles. Tell us if you usually drive with a lot of load so we can take that into account.
  • Description of symptoms: If the car pulls to one side, the steering wheel is off centre when driving straight, or you notice uneven tyre wear, tell us when you book or on arrival so we can focus on the relevant angles.

You do not need registration documents or ID for axle alignment.

Important information

When to have alignment checked: We recommend an alignment check after fitting new tyres (to protect them from uneven wear), after hitting a kerb or pothole, after replacing suspension or steering components (e.g. tie rods, wishbones, shock absorbers), or if you notice pulling, off-centre steering wheel or uneven wear.

Duration: A full measurement and adjustment usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes. If some angles are not adjustable or require special parts, we will explain the options and any extra cost.

Costs: We charge for the alignment check and adjustment; we will quote you before starting. Correct alignment extends tyre life and improves safety and comfort.
