Brake service and brake fluid
Brake pads, discs and brake fluid.
What is brake service and brake fluid?
The braking system is one of the most safety-critical parts of your vehicle. Brake pads and discs wear with use; when they are too thin, braking distance increases and in the worst case the brakes can fail. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time and can corrode the system and lower the boiling point – which can lead to brake fade under heavy use. Regular checks and replacement at the right time are essential for safety.
We check brake pads and discs (front and rear), replace them when they are worn below the limit or when you notice symptoms (e.g. squealing, pulling to one side, longer braking distance). We also change brake fluid at the intervals recommended by the manufacturer (usually every two to three years) and bleed the system so that there is no air in the lines. We use quality parts and fluid that meet manufacturer specifications.
What we do
- Inspection: We check the thickness of brake pads and discs on all wheels, the condition of brake lines and hoses (leaks, cracks), and the brake fluid level and condition. We look for uneven wear (e.g. one side more worn), which can indicate a sticking caliper or other fault.
- Pad and disc replacement: When pads (and, if necessary, discs) are worn below the limit or damaged, we replace them. We use quality parts (often OEM or equivalent) that meet the manufacturer specification. We clean and check the calipers and guide pins; we may recommend a brake fluid change at the same time.
- Brake fluid change: We drain the old fluid, refill with new brake fluid to the correct specification (e.g. DOT 4, DOT 5.1) and bleed the system at all bleed points so that no air remains. This restores the boiling point and protects the system from corrosion.
- Handbrake: We check the handbrake (cable or electric) and adjust it if necessary so that the vehicle is held securely when parked.
After brake work we do a short test drive (with your consent) to check that the brakes feel correct and there are no pulls or noises. We will tell you when the next check or fluid change is due.
What to bring?
- Vehicle – no need to bring registration documents or ID for brake work.
- If you notice symptoms (squealing, grinding, pulling to one side when braking, longer braking distance, soft pedal), please describe them when you book or on arrival so we can prioritise and plan the repair.
We use quality pads, discs and brake fluid; you do not need to bring your own parts unless we have agreed that in advance.
Important information
Brake fluid: Brake fluid should be changed every two to three years (or as specified by the manufacturer). We can test the water content; if it is too high, we recommend a change. Old fluid can cause corrosion in the ABS unit and calipers and can lead to expensive repairs.
HU: Worn brake pads or discs, or defective brake lines, are common reasons for failing the main vehicle inspection. We will advise you when replacement is due so you can plan the work before your next HU.
Duration and costs: Pad replacement (one axle) usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes; disc replacement takes longer. A brake fluid change with bleeding takes about 30 to 45 minutes. We will quote you before starting. Do not delay brake work – your safety and that of others depends on it.
