Main vehicle inspection (HU/AU)
Main vehicle inspection and emissions test from a single source.
What is the main vehicle inspection (HU/AU)?
The main vehicle inspection (Hauptuntersuchung, HU) and emissions test (Abgasuntersuchung, AU) are legally required in Germany for all cars and light commercial vehicles. The HU checks that your vehicle is roadworthy and safe; the AU verifies that exhaust emissions stay within legal limits. Together they are often referred to as "TÜV" (after the technical inspection bodies), but as an approved testing station we carry out both tests ourselves.
Your vehicle must pass HU/AU by the date shown on your last inspection sticker (or, for new vehicles, within three years of first registration). Driving without a valid inspection is illegal and can result in fines and invalidated insurance. As an approved testing station we perform HU and AU under one roof – no need to visit a separate centre. We work by appointment so you can plan your visit and avoid long waits.
What is checked?
During the main vehicle inspection we check all safety-relevant parts and systems. The emissions test measures exhaust gases (e.g. CO, HC, NOx and, for diesel, particulates) to ensure they are within the limits for your vehicle type.
- Braking system: brake pads, discs, drums, brake lines and brake fluid; brake performance on the roller brake tester.
- Lighting and electrical system: headlights (dipped and main beam), indicators, brake lights, rear lights, number-plate light, fog lights; headlight aim; wiring and battery.
- Chassis and steering: suspension, shock absorbers, springs, ball joints, steering linkage; play and condition of steering; wheel bearings.
- Tyres and wheels: tread depth (minimum 1.6 mm), condition, pressure; wheel fixings.
- Exhaust system: condition and leaks; during the AU, exhaust gas values are measured at idle and/or under load.
- Body and underbody: corrosion, sharp edges, insecure parts; doors, mirrors, windscreen and wipers.
- Seat belts and seats: presence, condition and function of belts; security of seat mountings.
If any item fails, we will tell you what needs to be repaired. After repairs you return for a re-test of the failed points (and, if applicable, a full re-test). We can carry out most repairs in our workshop so you often only need one visit.
What to bring?
- Vehicle registration document (Fahrzeugschein / Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I).
- Previous inspection report (Prüfbericht) if you have it – it shows the last test date and any remarks.
- Valid ID (identity card or passport) for the person presenting the vehicle.
- Vehicle: it must be at normal operating temperature for the emissions test (a short drive before the test is enough). Make sure the tank is not empty and the vehicle is in a roadworthy condition (e.g. no warning lights that would cause an immediate fail).
Important information
When is HU/AU due? New vehicles are first due 36 months after first registration, then every 24 months. The exact date is on your inspection sticker and in your last report. Do not leave it until the last day – book a slot in good time.
Tip: We strongly recommend having a manufacturer inspection or general check shortly before your HU/AU date. That way we can find and fix defects (e.g. worn brake pads, failed bulbs) in advance. On the day of the test you then only need to pass – no surprise failures.
Duration: A full HU plus AU usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes. If repairs are needed, we will agree a follow-up appointment.
Costs: The official testing fee is set by law. Any repairs are quoted separately. We will explain the cost before starting.
