Seasonal checks (winter, spring, holiday)

Get your vehicle ready for winter, spring or a long trip.

What are seasonal checks?

Seasonal checks prepare your vehicle for the conditions ahead: before winter we focus on battery, antifreeze, wipers and lights; before spring we can combine the check with a wheel change back to summer tyres; before a long trip we look at fluids, tyres, lights and general condition so you can set off with confidence.

They are not a substitute for the main vehicle inspection (HU/AU) or the manufacturer inspection, but they help you avoid breakdowns and unsafe conditions at times when demand on the vehicle is high (cold weather, long motorway trips). We go through a checklist tailored to the season or trip and tell you what is in order and what, if anything, needs attention.

What we check

Depending on whether the check is for winter, spring or a holiday trip, we focus on the relevant items. Typically we check:

  • Battery and charging: Battery condition, voltage and charging rate. Cold weather reduces battery capacity; a weak battery often fails in winter. We advise if replacement is recommended.
  • Coolant: Coolant level and concentration (frost protection). Too little antifreeze can lead to engine damage in frost; we top up or recommend a coolant change if necessary.
  • Wipers and washer fluid: Wiper blades and washer fluid (winter-grade in cold weather). Good visibility is essential in rain and snow.
  • Lights: All exterior lights work and, if you wish, headlight aim. In winter, lights are used more often and correct aim avoids dazzling other road users.
  • Tyres: Tread depth, condition and pressure. For winter we check that winter tyres are fitted and in good condition; for spring we can combine the check with a wheel change to summer tyres.
  • Oil and fluids: Engine oil level and condition; brake fluid, power steering fluid and windscreen washer. We advise if any fluid needs topping up or changing.
  • General condition: Belts, hoses and underbody for obvious wear or damage. Before a long trip we pay special attention to anything that could cause a breakdown far from home.

We report our findings clearly and recommend repairs or replacements only where necessary. You decide whether and when to have the work done.

What to bring?

  • Vehicle – no registration documents or ID needed for a seasonal check.
  • Tell us the purpose: Winter check, spring check or holiday trip – so we can focus on the right items and, if applicable, combine the check with a wheel change or other work.

Important information

Winter check: We recommend a winter check in autumn, before the first frost. That way the battery, coolant and wipers are ready for cold weather and you avoid surprises when you need the car most.

Spring check: When you switch back to summer tyres, we can combine the wheel change with a quick check of fluids, lights and general condition so the vehicle is ready for the warmer season.

Holiday trip: Before a long journey, book a few days in advance so we can fix any issues before you leave. We will focus on reliability and safety (tyres, lights, fluids, belts) so you can travel with peace of mind.

Duration and costs: A seasonal check usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes. We charge a fixed fee; any repairs or replacements are quoted separately. Combining the check with a wheel change or oil change can save you a separate visit.
