Timing belt replacement

Replace the timing belt before it fails.

What is the timing belt?

The timing belt (or timing chain on some engines) synchronises the crankshaft and camshaft so that the valves open and close at the right time in relation to the pistons. On many engines, if the belt breaks, the valves and pistons can collide and cause serious – often total – engine damage. Replacement at the manufacturer-recommended interval is therefore essential.

Intervals vary by engine: often every 5 to 10 years and/or 60,000 to 120,000 km (some manufacturers specify only time or only mileage; we follow the stricter limit). Some engines use a timing chain instead of a belt; chains usually last longer but can also wear or stretch and may need replacement. We will look up the correct interval for your vehicle and advise whether a belt or chain replacement is due.

What we do

  • Belt and tensioner: We remove the old timing belt and, where applicable, the tensioner and idler pulleys, and fit new parts. We set the correct timing (crankshaft and camshaft in the right position) and tension so that the belt runs correctly and does not jump or slip.
  • Water pump: On many engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt. Because access is the same and the pump often fails around the same mileage, we usually recommend replacing the water pump at the same time as the belt. We will quote you for the belt kit and, if applicable, the water pump.
  • Other components: Depending on the engine we may also replace seals (e.g. camshaft seal) or other belt-driven components (e.g. auxiliary drive belt) if they are worn or due. We will explain what we recommend and why.

We use quality timing belt kits (and water pumps) that meet or exceed manufacturer specifications. After the job we check that the engine runs correctly and that there are no leaks.

What to bring?

  • Vehicle – we need the current mileage (and, if known, the date of first registration or last belt change) to determine whether the belt is due.
  • Service booklet or service history if you have it – it helps us see when the belt was last changed and plan the next replacement.

You do not need registration documents or ID for timing belt replacement.

Important information

Do not delay: Do not wait until the belt is due – plan the replacement in good time. If the belt breaks, the repair cost is often many times higher than a preventive replacement.

Belt vs. chain: Some engines use a timing chain instead of a belt. Chains generally last longer but can wear or stretch; we will advise whether your vehicle has a belt or chain and at what interval replacement is recommended.

Duration and costs: Timing belt replacement is a substantial job and usually takes several hours (often half a day or more depending on the engine). We will quote you before starting. The quote includes the belt kit and, where recommended, the water pump and any other parts we replace at the same time.
